Slow site, lost sales: how much speed really matters

intermedia team · · 2 min read

Speed is not a technical detail. It is your site’s first salesperson: it gets to speak before the visitor sees anything else. And when it is slow, the visitor does not complain. They simply leave.

What the numbers say

Google’s measurements have been consistent for years: as load time climbs from 1 to 3 seconds, the probability of abandonment nearly doubles. In e-shops the effect is even harsher, because the user passes through many pages on the way to checkout and the delay adds up at every step.

There is also a second, less visible cost: Google ranks slow sites lower. You pay twice, in customers who left and in customers who never found you at all.

Where a typical site gets stuck

Across the hundreds of sites we host and support, the same four problems keep coming back:

  • Overloaded hosting. A shared server with hundreds of sites, far from your market, no NVMe storage. Whatever you do to the site, the ceiling stays low.
  • Uncompressed images. Photos 4000 pixels wide where 800 would do, in old formats instead of WebP.
  • Plugin party. Every plugin that “does something” loads scripts everywhere. Forty plugins is not a record, it is a Tuesday morning.
  • No caching. WordPress rebuilds the same page on every visit instead of serving a ready copy.

What can be fixed without a rebuild

The good news: most of the above can be fixed on the existing site. Image compression, caching, a plugin cleanup and a move to serious hosting change the picture within days. On our own infrastructure, with our own servers and NVMe storage, the difference usually shows on the first refresh.

If the site has deeper problems, the signs give it away: even the admin is slow, every change needs a developer, the theme never gets updated out of fear. Then a rebuild conversation is worth having. We wrote about when to change hosting and when the site itself is to blame.

Measure honestly, not only with tools

PageSpeed Insights gives a useful picture, but the most honest measurement is a mid-range phone on mobile data, not WiFi. Open your site the way your customer would open it on the bus. That is the experience that sells or drives away.
